at Culver Mansion
In
1874, Wisconsin editor and publisher John Oscar Culver brought
his wife Minnie Bliss, an artist, and their five children to
Calistoga. The home they built was admired by many and was dubbed
by the San Francisco papers as the "Culver Mansion."
Culver Mansion, circa 1875, is a graceful three level Victorian
residence, set on the hillside, with a sweeping view of Mount
St. Helena, the Palisades and Napa Valley. The Mansion is a historical
landmark, admired for its uncommon Jerkinhead or clipped gable
roof, a variation of the Gothic Revival style. The Culver Mansion
was completely restored in 1981 to 1983. The bedrooms are artfully
decorated in various period styles including Victorian, Edwardian,
Art Deco, Art Nouveau and Early Twentieth Century. Most rooms
have en suite bathrooms. Culver Mansion is at the foothills of
Mount St. Helena, at the northern end of the Napa Valley, about
70 miles north of San Francisco in the town of Calistoga. Culver
Mansion is but a short walk from the Main Street of Calistoga.
This small friendly town welcomes tourists and is a wonderful
mixture of practical and quaint Americana. It is world-famous
for the healing powers of its mineral waters, herbal and mud
baths.
